MINI GLIDER
A smooth passive board that give a balance of trim and sensitivity.
The mini glider was born out of years dedicated to riding gliders in a variety of surf. I loved the inherent trim and carry gliders gave you from knee high waves all the way up to triple overhead.
I wanted to explore if I could carry over the same feeling of trim and glide, then apply it to a shorter and more agile size. Substantial width has been added to the mini glider to keep stability and trim in smaller surf. Light hull in the nose entry to help keep the nose from poking in steeper surf whilst maintain a lower entry rocker. Through the centre there is flat panel with subtle roll into the rails allows the board to trim and sit on top of the water contrasting to a generic hull bottom that sucks to the water surface therefore creating drag.
The contour then runs into panel vee / vee double to add drive and sensitivity when turning. I love the feeling of being able to swoop a larger board onto rail rather than having to swivel the board flat or bog the rail. I found this subtle blend of contours and rail line curve achieved this. These style boards are very forgiving and don’t need to be surfed with expert technique like much hull bottom mid-lengths.
CUSTOM GLIDER ORDER
ORDER PROCESS
Ordering typically begins with a face-to-face consultation at my studio in Bells Beach. Alternatively, the consultation can take part over email or a phone call. During this process we discuss all the adjustments needed to make the board specific to the surfer.
Turnaround time is around 8 to 10 weeks depending on current work load.
COLOUR
Colour work is a way for me to have a dual response to board expression. Studying Josef Albers ‘Interaction of Colour’ and working with my father Simon Buttonshaw and brother Raphael Buttonshaw, deepened my exploration of colour and its relationship to how surfboards look and feel in the ocean. We can discuss this further throughout the ordering process to find a colourway that connects with you.
FINS
For a 2+1 I recomend Glide WLSS 3 1/4” side bites paired with a 7” GJ07 single fin. The small 3 1/4” sides give you the benefit of added grip and stability without too much compromise on trim.
As a straight single fin I recommend using an 8” flex fin or dolphin.
