SB TWIN

Blending the best aspects of quads, twin fins, and thrusters.

The SB twin provides myself and customers with a direct alternative to a short board thruster. Born from my experience with upright performance twins, where I found the erratic nature frustrating but loved the acceleration and freedom they offered.

The SB twin resulted from blending my knowledge of quads, twin fins, and thrusters, finding what elements worked best between them. It sits somewhere between all three, featuring a single concave for trimming off a flatter bottom line. A moderate rail line curve gives it lively response and prevents it from feeling flat, dramatically reducing the instability of generic upright twin fins. Fins positioned further back offset the pivot whilst adding forward projection. These boards are versatile, scaling from small wave all-rounders to larger wave step-ups. The small wave SB twin has reduced rocker throughout and a wider plan shape in the nose and tail, ideal for softer beach breaks in Japan.

Though not a full fish, this board performs well in the shoulder to well-overhead range. The SB twin + features a moderate continuous rocker and pulled-in outline for greater control in larger, more powerful surf, suitable from head high to well over double overhead. They can be custom-made into larger gun-style boards for waves well over double overhead. All SB twins are recommended for use with Glide SBT and SBT1 fins, specifically designed to enhance the dynamic response of a keel template while minimising pivot, available at Ride Surf and Sport.

CUSTOM SB ORDER

ORDER PROCESS

Ordering typically begins with a face-to-face consultation at my studio in Bells Beach. Alternatively, the consultation can take part over email or a phone call. During this process we discuss all the adjustments needed to make the board specific to the surfer.
Turnaround time is around 8 to 10 weeks depending on current work load.

COLOUR

Colour work is a way for me to have a dual response to board expression. Studying Josef Albers ‘Interaction of Colour’ and working with my father Simon Buttonshaw and brother Raphael Buttonshaw, deepened my exploration of colour and its relationship to how surfboards look and feel in the ocean. We can discuss this further throughout the ordering process to find a colourway that connects with you.

FINS

Glide SBT mediums or larges. These fins have been designed to reduce the erratic nature of upright templates but gives you a more dynamic response than a directional keel fin. Because of this, I recommend that a stabilizer fin is not needed.
