GLIDER
Trims well and allows you to turn off the whole length of the rail.
This style board has been closest to my heart since I first created one in 2018. A tow surfing injury led to torn ligaments in my knee, keeping me out of the water for 16 months. This setback prompted me to broaden my perspective on surfing and board design.
While I admired the surfing on Skip Fry style gliders in San Diego, I sought a more balanced outline and rocker for my board. This would extend the sweet spot and create a natural curve from nose to tail.
I needed a board to glide along smaller point breaks around Bells without exerting too much pressure on my recovering knee. As my recovery progressed, I tested these boards in more critical surf, adapting the design along the way.
The testing ground primarily was my home break at Bells Beach. I appreciated the momentum gained through rail turns, even in flatter sections. The single fin proved crucial in maintaining speed and drive, unlike some thrusters that slow down as they lose activation.
This board is a good option for someone looking for a long board that trims well and allows you to turn off the whole length of rail.
CUSTOM GLIDER ORDER
ORDER PROCESS
Ordering typically begins with a face-to-face consultation at my studio in Bells Beach. Alternatively, the consultation can take part over email or a phone call. During this process we discuss all the adjustments needed to make the board specific to the surfer.
Turnaround time is around 8 to 10 weeks depending on current work load.
COLOUR
Colour work is a way for me to have a dual response to board expression. Studying Josef Albers ‘Interaction of Colour’ and working with my father Simon Buttonshaw and brother Raphael Buttonshaw, deepened my exploration of colour and its relationship to how surfboards look and feel in the ocean. We can discuss this further throughout the ordering process to find a colourway that connects with you.
FINS
For a 2+1 I recomend Glide WLSS 3 1/4” side bites paired with a 7” GJ07 single fin. The small 3 1/4” sides give you the benefit of added grip and stability without too much compromise on trim.
As a straight single fin I recommend using an 8” flex fin or dolphin.
